John W. Campbell

John W. Campbell, Jr. (1910-1971), considered by some to have been the father of modern science fiction, edited Astounding/Analog magazine from 1937 until his death. He also introduced a fantasy magazine called Unknown (later Unknown Worlds) for four years, starting in 1939.
Campbell is recognized for introducing and shaping the early work of many of the finest authors in the genre by the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, named in his honor, along with the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel of the year.
